BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
Asam gelugur fruits are large and lobed, shaped much like a miniature pumpkin, though grows up on tall trees. It is orange-yellow in color when ripe, surrounded by drooping branches and leaves.
HABITAT
Native to peninsular Malaysian forests, it is found now in India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Singapore.

Pleasantly sour, it has an almost candy-like quality to it, especially the dried slices of the fruit.
COMMON USE
A very common alternative and supplement to tamarind to give a fruity sourness to many food items from curries to drinks.
USE IN DEWAKAN
The fruit is candied and served with ice made from fermented rice, along with fresh coconut palm toddy.
