BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
The fruits look like colorful fresh dates on the stalk, ranging from vegetal green to bright reddish-purple when ripe. The trees grow tall and not very wide, with shiny oval leaves.
HABITAT
Native to the Philippines, Sulawesi, Borneo, and New Guinea, now widely cultivated around Southeast Asia.
SEASON
Fruits up to 2 times a year, though not following specific seasons.
TASTE/AROMA
Its fruits and leaves have a nutty flavor and mild astringency.
COMMON USE
Its nuts are pounded to make into a cracker called emping or kerepek belinjau. Young leaves and flowers are also simply cooked in stir-fries and soups.
USE IN DEWAKAN
Belinjau fruit is made into a cracker then shaped into a little origami frog. It is then filled with pickled chestnut puree and caviar from Perak.
