The spiky fruits ripen brown then fall to the ground, where it splits and releases the nuts. They are less than 5cm wide, smaller than the more common Castanopsis hypophoenicea which grow up to 11cm wide.
HABITAT
Native to Sumatera, peninsular Malaysia, and Borneo, growing in heath forests known as kerangas.

TASTE/AROMA
The white kernels are edible raw, but are much tastier roasted, reminiscent of the common chestnut.
COMMON USE
The kernels are roasted and eaten as a snack.
USE IN DEWAKAN
The pickled berangan is pureed (or is the berangan pureed and then pickled?), then wrapped in belinjau origami frog and paired with Perak caviar.
