The small, lobed fruits grow along the trunk and branches of its prolific tree. The fruits appear similar to the common gooseberry, though those are smooth and not lobed.
HABITAT
A common backyard tree all over Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Possibly originated from Madagascar and the southern regions of Africa.
SEASON
Typically fruits during dry seasons.
TASTE/AROMA
The fruit is very sour and not commonly eaten fresh.
COMMON USE
Its fruits are often made into jams and drinks.
USE IN DEWAKAN
Still in R&D, the hard and tart white-green fruits are processed into jams, while the soft red fruits are made into sorbet.
