Visually a cross between snakefruit and lychee, the fruit grows in tight clusters. The trees are botanically part of the palm family and appear visually so.
HABITAT
Found in peat swamp forests in peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo.
SEASON
Available year-round, with a peak fruiting season between February to April.
TASTE/AROMA
Texturally reminiscent of langsat fruits crossed with mangosteens, with a sweetly tangy scent and extremely acidic flavor.
COMMON USE
Used as a souring agent in curries and fish dishes, a substitute for tamarind or kandis. It can also be added to sambals or pickled and used in drinks.
USE IN DEWAKAN
Asam kelubi is made into a granita.
