A palm tree with multiple tall and thin stems, the fruits grow in clusters along the base. The fruit skin is reddish-brown and scaley, hence the name snakefruit.

Indigenous in Malaysia and Borneo, and cultivated around Southeast Asia.

TASTE/AROMA
The fruit smells sweet, and its taste a sweet-sour crunch with a mild sappy aftertaste.
COMMON USE
Often eaten as is, or pickled with vinegar as a sour snack.
USE IN DEWAKAN
A piece of the salak fruit is sandwiched with jicama, served with wrapped patin fish and bambangan treacle.
